New Water Monitoring Fact Sheets

CMC Releases Updated Water Monitoring Parameter Fact Sheets

The Chesapeake Monitoring Cooperative is excited to share a newly updated set of 11 water-monitoring parameter fact sheets. Parameters include: Bacteria, Benthic Macroinvertebrates, Chlorophyll, Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen, Nitrogen, pH, Phosphorus, Salinity, Temperature, and Water Clarity & Turbidity. These revisions make the fact sheets more accessible for volunteers and community members, with clearer language and straightforward explanations designed for anyone interested in understanding their local waterways.

Each fact sheet now includes step-by-step descriptions of how the parameter is measured, the equipment needed, estimated startup costs, and the time commitment required to begin monitoring. This helps new and experienced monitors alike know exactly what to expect as they plan their sampling efforts.

The updated materials also connect each parameter to the CMC’s Community Connection Chart. The “Why Do We Care?” section highlights common water issues or community concerns that relate to that specific parameter fact sheet. Finally, each fact sheet now includes a simplified overview of what to look for when interpreting results, giving volunteers a clearer sense of what different readings can say about the health of their streams, rivers, and wetlands.

Together, these improvements make the fact sheets a more welcoming entry point for water monitoring and a valuable tool for anyone working to understand and protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed. You can find the new fact sheets here or by navigating to the resources button at the top of the CMC website.
